Holiday Market Magic: European Christmas Markets Tour to Remember

Last December, a friend asked me to join her on a European Christmas Markets Classic Tour with Collette. At first, I hesitated. Winter travel wasn’t really my thing, and I’d already explored a few countries during the year. But, I’m so glad I gave in. Little did I know, this trip would completely change my perspective on winter travel and leave me saying “magical” way more often than I’d like to admit.

Looking back, this tour felt like stepping into a real-life postcard — one full of Hallmark movie moments, holiday cheer, and unexpected magic. Picture this: Touring a grand palace in Austria, then heading to the palace’s own outdoor Christmas market, sipping hot gin while snowflakes start falling gently around you. Magic.

Let me take you through a whirlwind nine days in five countries that forever changed my idea of what the holiday season could be. Trust me, this was one adventure you won’t want to miss hearing about.

Day 1: Prague, Czech Republic

We started our journey in the enchanting city of Prague, where we would spend three magical nights. The first day alone was filled with iconic sights, starting with the Prague Castle, the St. Vitus Cathedral, and the Charles Bridge—each one more awe-inspiring than the last. We took a peaceful boat ride along the Vltava River, offering stunning views of the city’s skyline, before wandering through Christmas markets. And, of course, I had my first taste of goulash and chimney cake—two treats I would find myself craving long after the trip.

Day 2: Dresden, Germany

Next up was a day trip to Dresden, Germany. We visited four different Christmas markets, including the world’s oldest, the Striezelmarkt. The festive atmosphere, filled with the scent of mulled wine and roasted chestnuts, was exactly what I imagined when I thought of a European holiday market. It was like walking through a winter wonderland, complete with twinkling lights, handcrafted ornaments, and delightful local goods. After a full day of market-hopping, we headed back to Prague, filled with holiday cheer.

Day 3: Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic to Vienna, Austria

On our third day, we made a stop in Cesky Krumlov, a fairy-tale town in the Czech Republic, for a lunch break. Let me tell you, Cesky Krumlov might just be one of the most picturesque places I’ve ever visited. Its medieval streets, colorful buildings, and snow-dusted roofs could easily be plucked straight from a storybook.

We then continued on to Vienna, Austria, where we would spend two nights. Vienna was everything I imagined — elegant, regal, and steeped in history. The next day was a dream come true, as we toured the magnificent Schonbrunn Palace, which was decorated to perfection for the holidays. Afterward, we went on a walking tour of the city, watched candy-making in action, explored a few more Christmas markets, and ended the evening with a delightful concert in one of the city’s beautiful concert halls. Magical? Absolutely.

Day 4: Bratislava, Slovakia

The following day, we crossed into Slovakia and made a stop in Bratislava. After a beautiful snowy walk up to the Bratislava Castle, I was treated to some of the most breathtaking views over the city and the Danube River. The medieval market in the castle courtyard was full of local crafts, food, and holiday spirit. After descending the castle hill, I spent time wandering through the city’s charming streets and additional markets. Every corner of this city seemed to have its own festive charm.

Day 5–6: Budapest, Hungary

Our final destination was Budapest, Hungary, where we spent the last two nights of the tour. Budapest is a city with grand architecture, and during the holidays, it takes on a whole new level of romance.

A Food Lover’s Dream

I should mention, this tour turned into a delightful quest for the best goulash and chimney cakes. I was officially hooked on both. Goulash, in all its deliciously hearty forms, was my comfort food of choice by the end of the trip. And those chimney cakes? I think I could’ve eaten them every day, and I may have. In fact, I’ve since started making my own goulash at home in an attempt to recapture some of the joy of this trip. The with unique mugs for every hot beverage, from hot chocolate to mulled wine to hot gin. You could either return the mugs for a partial refund or, like me, keep them as souvenirs. They made for perfect mementos of this unforgettable journey. My mission now? To attend holiday markets across the world every year and sample their local treats and warm beverages wherever I go!

What’s Next?

This year, I’m continuing the holiday market tradition with a river cruise through Germany with Helene In Between. I’m beyond excited for the experience — I can’t imagine a better way to spend the holiday season than on the water, visiting even more festive markets along the way. To say I’m ecstatic is an understatement.

I truly hope you’ll join me on this next adventure, whether in spirit or in person. There’s something about the holiday season in Europe that’s unlike anything else, and I can’t wait to experience it again.

Cheers,
Heidi
