An Unforgettable Adventure: My Collette Icelandic Explorations Tour
In May 2024, I embarked on the Collette Icelandic Adventure Explorations 10-day tour, and let me tell you, it was nothing short of spectacular! Iceland had always been on my travel bucket list, and this small group tour exceeded every expectation. If you’re looking for an adventure that combines natural beauty, unique cultural experiences, and outstanding service, this is it. I’m thrilled to share some highlights from my unforgettable journey.
Why I Loved the Small Group Experience
One of the standout features of the Explorations tours by Collette is the intimate group size. With just a few other travelers, it felt more like an adventure with friends than a typical large tour group. Our guide was exceptional — knowledgeable, personable, and always ready with fascinating tidbits about Iceland’s history, culture, and natural wonders. The smaller group size also allowed us to visit less-crowded sites, making the experience more personal and immersive.
Highlights of the Trip
Our adventure began in Reykjavik, where we kicked off with a walking tour of the city. Reykjavik is an absolute gem, with its modern architecture, colorful buildings, and cozy vibe. We wandered the streets, visited beautiful landmarks, and got our first taste of Icelandic culture.
The Golden Circle was our next stop, and it didn’t disappoint. We explored iconic sites like Thingvellir National Park, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, creating dramatic landscapes. Then it was off to see the famous Geysir (yes, that’s where the term “geyser†comes from!) and the majestic Gullfoss waterfall, which is a must-see for anyone visiting Iceland.
We also had the chance to try geothermal bread at the Fontana Geothermal Bakery, where they bake bread underground using the heat from natural hot springs. It was such a cool experience, and the bread, served with butter and smoked trout, was absolutely delicious!
One of the most unforgettable moments was visiting Sky Lagoon Iceland, an upscale geothermal spa that I fell in love with. The combination of the stunning views, the hot waters, and the tranquil atmosphere made it feel like pure luxury. If you’re planning a trip to Iceland, don’t miss this spot!
Nature at Its Best
Iceland’s nature is stunning, and the tour gave us plenty of opportunities to experience it up close. We visited a glacier, wandered through dramatic lava fields in Dimmuborgir, and marveled at the stunning Godafoss waterfall. We even got to relax in the Myvatn Baths amidst a snowy landscape — a surreal and magical experience.
A highlight for nature lovers was the Husavik whale watching excursion. We went out on a RIB boat (a smaller, faster vessel) and had an amazing time spotting humpback whales and puffins. It was such a unique way to experience Iceland’s incredible wildlife.
We also visited Grjotagja, a geothermal cave with a natural hot spring, and the Hverir Geothermal Field, where steam vents and boiling mud pots made for an otherworldly landscape. Iceland truly feels like a land of fire and ice!
Immersive Cultural Experiences
Beyond the natural wonders, we also had the chance to dive into Icelandic culture. We visited the Grenjadarstadur Turf House, a beautifully preserved traditional Icelandic home made of turf and stone, where we learned about the country’s history and early settlements.
One of the most charming stops was the Steinnes Breeding Farm, where we had the chance to meet Icelandic horses, if you’re an animal lover, this is a place you’ll want to visit.
The Snaefellsnes Peninsula
If you’re looking for dramatic landscapes, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula is a must-see. Often called “Iceland in Miniature,†this region has it all: glaciers, volcanoes, black sand beaches, and picturesque fishing villages. The rugged beauty of the peninsula was absolutely breathtaking.
Culinary Delights
Let’s talk about food! Icelandic cuisine is fantastic, and I was blown away by the variety and quality of meals throughout the tour. From fresh seafood to hearty lamb dishes and even the famous Icelandic hot dogs, every meal was a treat. I especially loved the local pastries and yogurt, which were a great way to start each day.
An Unforgettable Journey
One of the most memorable parts of the trip was my return journey. I had the incredible luck of being upgraded to first class on my flight home with Iceland Air. As a first-time first-class passenger, it was an unforgettable experience. The comfort, service, and even the champagne made my flight home the perfect end to an already amazing trip.

With its blend of stunning natural wonders, immersive cultural experiences, and top-notch service, I can’t recommend it enough.
