Rudesheim – CHARM, Coffee & Wine

Helene In Between River Cruise Day 3: Exploring Rüdesheim – Castles, Wine, and Timeless Charm

SailING THE RHINE & THE LORELEI ROCK

One of the day’s highlights was sailing along the Rhine and viewing some of the most famous castles perched high on the Rhine’s dramatic cliffs. We went up to the ship’s deck to enjoy the views and to see the Lorelei. The Lorelei is a 433 feet (132-metre-high), steep slate rock on the right bank of the River Rhine in the Rhine Gorge at Sankt Goarshausen and is part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to myths, the rock was once frequented by a beautiful siren who lured sailors to their deaths. We celebrated passing it with a special cocktail.

Arriving in ChARMING Rüdesheim

We arrived in picturesque Rüdesheim in the Rheingau wine region. Luckily it was a short walk away from the ship’s dock. Known for its half-timbered houses, wine shops, and narrow cobblestone streets, Rüdesheim is a quaint German town.

We first headed on a walking tour of Rüdesheim, stopping at Drosselgasse, the town’s most famous street. Our next stop was the Mechanical Instrument Museum (Siegfried’s Mechanisches Musikkabinett).

COFFEE & Wine Tasting

I went on an optional excursion to learn about and taste the famous Rüdesheimer Kaffee. This drink is made with coffee, sugar, whipped cream, and a splash of local brandy, Asbach.

We then walked to a nearby winery for a wine tasting Rüdesheim’s vineyards are world-renowned, particularly for producing exceptional Rieslings.

Cheers,

Heidi
