Ferries & Isles

Scotland 🏴 Oban • Mull • Iona

Day 4 took us beyond the mainland and into Scotland’s western isles.

Morning Departure: Ferry from Oban

We headed to Oban and grabbed some snacks and lunch at Marks & Spencer before beginning our journey catching the ferry from Oban across to the Isle of Mull. The ferry took under an hour and we had comfortable seating and tables to enjoy our lunch.

The Isle of Mull

Once we arrived on Mull, we boarded a coach for a scenic drive across the island with winding roads, glens, and postcard-perfect hills.

Arriving on Iona

After a short passenger ferry ride from Mull, we reached Iona, a tiny island. Known as the “Cradle of Christianity” in Scotland, Iona is home to the historic Iona Abbey, founded in 563 AD by St. Columba.

Less than 200 people live on Iona and only nine children attend the primary school. Once the children complete their primary education, they then need to attend their remaining education on the mainland, while living there.

We walked through the nunnery, passed some shops, before exploring the abbey grounds along the shorelines of Iona.

The view of the water are stunning and it’s hard to believe you are in Scotland with the beautiful shades of blue and green of the water. I even dipped my feet in!

ReturnING TO LOCH MELFORT

After a full day immersed in island life, we retraced our steps — ferry from Iona to Mull, scenic drive back across the island, and the ferry return to Oban. We returned to the Loch Melfort Hotel for our final stay. I have loved staying at this hotel.

More to come!
