Bern to Zermatt

Day 16 – Switzerland Day 4: From Bern’s Old Town to Alpine Zermatt

We started the morning with a scenic train ride to Bern, the capital city of Switzerland. Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the old town is full of character—arched stone arcades, colorful fountains, and centuries of history at every turn.

We joined a chocolate walking tour tasting our way through Bern’s historic center. Along the way, we admired the iconic Zytglogge (Clock Tower), a medieval timepiece that still puts on a show every hour.

Next, we visited BärenPark, where we saw the city’s beloved bears relaxing in their hillside habitat near the river. We then boarded a bus that took us up above the city, offering stunning views over the rooftops. Up there, we strolled through the beautiful gardens and stopped at the statue of Albert Einstein, who lived in Bern while developing his theory of relativity.

After some free time and lunch back in the city center, we returned to the train station for the next leg of our journey—on to the mountain resort town of Zermatt.

Though we arrived to a foggy and rainy evening and no sign of the Matterhorn just yet, I took a walk through the car-free village. From my room at the Hotel Alex, I could hear sheep and cowbells just outside—a true Swiss countryside experience.
